North Little Rock is located on the north bank of the Arkansas River in the center of the state of Arkansas. In 1866, the town of Argenta was surveyed and platted. The name Argenta, meaning silver, referred to the silver mines north of the town site. In 1890, the community of Argenta filed papers to incorporate as a city. However, the City of Little Rock, Argenta's "southern neighbor" across the Arkansas River, had other plans. Little Rock quickly passed legislation to annex the little community and make it that city's eight ward. Argenta mover and shaker W. C. Faucette countered by getting himself elected to the Arkansas state legislature where he introduced a bill to change the situation. His bill made it possible for a new city to be created by annexing the eighth ward of Little Rock. That new city was called North Little Rock.
