History of the Main Library
A group of Little Rock citizens applied to the Carnegie Corporation in 1909 for funds to build a public library. At various times since 1867 subscription libraries sponsored by a community group had operated in Little Rock, but no municipal library service existed. Industrialist Andrew Carnegie (railroads, coal, and US Steel) in his later years became noted for financing construction of over 2,500 public libraries during the 1800's and the early 1900's.

History of the Williams Branch Library
The Williams Library was opened in March 1997 to serve resident s of the eastern portion of Downtown Little Rock. It was named in honor of Sue Cowan Williams, a Little Rock school teacher who, in 1942, won a ruling in her lawsuit against the Little Rock School District for paying black teachers less than white teachers. She was represented in her fight by future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. |
